As actors, we don’t have a canvas, a piano, or a piece of clay. We are the instrument. Our body, our unique facial features, our natural movementsβthis is the raw material, the absolute starting point for every single character we will ever build.
If you don’t know your own neutral stateβif you don’t recognize your personal physical habits, the way you naturally hold your tension, or how your face restsβhow can you consciously change them to step into the life of someone else?
Knowing yourself is one of the most critical skills you can develop on the studio floor. Spend time getting to know your own instrument. Study how you move, how you breathe, and how your emotions physically manifest.
You cannot build a truthful character on top of a foundation you don’t understand. The journey to becoming someone else always starts with knowing exactly who you are.
