Let’s be real: none of us has personal memories of ruling an empire or commanding the sands of ancient Egypt. So, how do we truthfully play these characters?
Enter Stella Adler.
We recently started diving into the Stella Adler technique in class, and the results have been absolutely incredible and honestly, a lot of fun!. Unlike other methods that ask you to constantly dig into your own past to find an emotion, Adler believed that your greatest tool as an actor is your imagination.
The world of the script is almost always bigger than your own life. If you limit your acting only to what you have personally experienced, your choices will be incredibly small. But when you actively build an imaginary worldβ€”understanding the history, finding the high status, and fully committing to the physical reality of a Roman or Egyptian royalβ€”you give yourself permission to play on a massive scale.
This improvisation was an absolute blast. It was bold, it was spontaneous, and it proved exactly what happens when actors stop worrying about “getting it right” and start trusting their imagination to build the universe.
Your imagination is a muscle. Get on the floor and flex it! 🎬πŸ”₯
