We talk a lot about “connection” in acting. But sometimes, connection looks like two people screaming across a canyon, trying desperately to be heard.
Saturday (Nov 30th), Steve and Emily took us into the deep end of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea.
In this section, the walls came down. It wasn’t just about anger anymore. It was about pain. Steve’s admissionβ€””Everything hurts. I’m lonely.”β€”was so raw it felt like he was bleeding on stage. That feeling of being so uncomfortable in your own body, so misunderstood, that you are literally “jumping out of your skin.”
And Emily, standing in the fire with him. When he says, “You make me mad because you want something,” she didn’t flinch. She stayed in the pocket.
They navigated that terrifying dance between “crazy” and “stupid,” between pushing someone away and begging them to stay.
Uta Hagen said, “We must overcome our confusion, our fear, and our tension, and learn to make use of our real self.”
Steve and Emily, you used your real selves to show us something ugly and beautiful at the same time. You showed us that even in the madness, there is a human being just wanting to be known.
Incredible work. You made us feel it all.
