We’ve all been there on the studio floor or on set. A director gives you a note that sounds incredibly abstract, and in a momentary panic to “fix” it, you just end up talking louder, walking faster, or adding a bunch of random hand gestures.
But acting isn’t about physical quick-fixes. When a director gives you a note, they usually aren’t asking you to change what your body is doing physically—they are asking you to change why your character is doing it internally. They are looking for an emotional shift, not a mechanical one.
The next time you get a note that completely confuses you, don’t just guess with your body. Take a breath, ask for clarification if you need it, and find the psychological root behind the instruction.
