The Backstory Novelist truly cares. They have an immense, fiery passion for the craft and a burning desire to create a fully realized human being. They understand the old saying: there are no small parts.
Just remember the Golden Rule:
Backstory is seasoning, not a stew that eats the pot. Use your preparation to ground your character, but don’t let it hijack the scene. The audience doesn’t need to read your novel; they just need to believe you are in the room. Tell the story we are actually in.
Be thorough. Be imaginative. Do the work.
Because at the end of the day, a rich inner life is what makes a performance unforgettable.
Keep digging deep, keep exploring, and for the love of Hemingway… please just tell the customer their table is ready.
