It is our official first week diving into the Michael Chekhov technique here at MasterClass Studio, and the actors are having an absolute blast!
But we are also slamming into a very real, very humbling challenge on the studio floor: maintaining absolute concentration while navigating active distractions is incredibly difficult.
The Chekhov technique requires deep psycho-physical engagement. Your mind and body have to be entirely locked into the psychological gesture and the atmosphere of the scene. When you suddenly introduce external distractions into the exercise, the natural human instinct is for your focus to completely scatter.
Watching these actors fight to hold their center of concentration amidst the chaos has been equal parts hilarious and profoundly inspiring. Building that unbreakable focus is a muscle, and we are definitely getting a serious workout this week!
