Weβve all shared the floor with someone who feels the need to fill every single second of a scene with noise. They add dramatic sighs, heavy breathing, aggressive gasps, and even mimic the sound of props moving. They try to do the sound designer’s job right there in the middle of a dialogue!
But here is a fundamental truth of the craft: you do not need to fill every quiet moment just because you feel uncomfortable.
Trust the stillness. The most powerful, heartbreaking, and authentic moments in a performance almost always happen in the quiet spaces between the words. When you constantly add unnecessary grunts and whispers, you aren’t adding depthβyou are just distracting the audience from the actual emotional truth of the scene.
Stop trying to provide your own soundtrack, and let the silence do the heavy lifting!
